[Unzap] Learning IR Codes

I was wondering how you set up unzap to learn codes. According to the
project page it contains a "learning mechanism (which can detect the correct
carrier frequency)" but I couldn't find anything that learns codes in
unzap.c. I would have thought that finding the carrier frequency would
require sampling from the ADC and then running some sort of FFT to find the
frequency, but the receiver is not connected to an ADC port. Can someone
help me understand this?
